Latin American Internet population still struggling to achieve digital lifestyle

Buenos Aires, December 5th - DVD players and Digital cameras are nowhere near saturation limits in Latin America's biggest economies: Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

  • In average, less than 21% of Internet users in these countries own a digital camera and less than 23% are planning to buy one soon.
  • As far as DVD players are concerned, Mexico (with over 80% of Internet users owning the devices) seems to be well ahead in comparison to Argentina (34.2%) and Brazil (56.4%).

These are the results of an online survey conducted by Livra Online Research during November 2004. Around 69,400 adults completed the survey.

While Argentina is far behind Brazil and Mexico as regards DVD and Digital Camera penetration, it is well ahead on Cable or Satellite TV adoption.

  • More than 70% of respondents in Argentina have said to watch cable or satellite TV at home, closely after is Mexico (with 56.3%) - leaving Brazil at the bottom, with only 31.8%.

Methodology for Livra Online Research Surveys

This survey was conducted online within Argentina, Mexico and Brazil between September 27th and November 5th, 2004 among 69.400 people, aged 18 and older. Figures for age, sex, race, education, income and region were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. "Propensity score" weighting was also used to adjust for respondents' propensity to be online.

In theory, with probability samples of this size, one could say with 95 percent certainty that the results have a statistical precision of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points of what they would be if the entire adult population had been polled with complete accuracy. Unfortunately, there are several other possible sources of error in all polls or surveys that are probably more serious than theoretical calculations of sampling error. They include refusals to be interviewed (non-response), question wording and question order, and weighting. It is impossible to quantify the errors that may result from these factors. This online sample is not a probability sample.
